While IPL treatment is an easy and effective hair removal method for some, it unfortunately is not suitable for darker skin tones. This is because of the pigment melanin which is present in both your skin and hair. Darker skin tones contain more melanin than fair skin. As such, when IPL is used on melanin-rich, darker skin, the heat energy can be transferred onto the skin cells causing discolouration and in severe cases even burns and blisters. As such, SHR was developed to target melanin-rich skin and coarse hair which cannot be treated with IPL.
